New Art

Lately I've been working on a new form of art to me. I have manipulated several pictures in hopes of learning how to use photoshop. Below is the first manipulated picture I have ever made. I hope you guys enjoy and I wish I could bring you more soon.

One Night of Glamour for Ten Years of Poverty

We often wonder what if. What if we had more money? What if we had a different life? Why are we always inclined to want something that we cannot have? In “The Necklace”, Guy De Maupassant uses imagery, symbolism, and irony to uncover that not everything is as real as it may seem. The author uses very little space to make an interesting story along with an unexpected twist ending.

This story is about a woman in the middle class married to a clerk that gets invited to an exclusive ball. Mathilde, like any woman in her situation, dreams of the fancy life.  This story is very similar to a fairy tale like Cinderella. She refuses to go at first because she has nothing fancy to wear. So her husband, this is essentially where the fairy godmother enters, gives up the money that he had saved up to buy a gun to give it to her so she could buy a fancy dress.  

There is another challenge that our main character faces. As the date approaches she is sad again because she does not have any jewelry to accompany the fancy dress. She asks a rich friend to lend her some jewelry to make her outfit complete and ends up with the most gorgeous diamond necklace. After a great night at the party she loses the necklace and spends the next 10 years of her life trying to pay for the replacement necklace only to find out that it was a fake all along.

Maupassant makes it clear how cruel life can be. Because of her pride she could not tell her friend that she had lost the necklace. She and her husband would not have borrowed a lot of money to replace it.  If it was not for Mathilde’s dissatisfaction with her common life, she and her husband would not have to have suffered for 10 years. She also would have not wasted her life and beauty on regrets. She did learn a valuable lesson on how much worse it was to live like the poor.

The author uses imagery to make us aware of her living situation. The extent of her envy is clearly pointed out when she dreams of “thought of a noiseless, hollowed ante-room, with Oriental carpets, lighted with tall branching candlesticks of bronze and… of a long drawing-room hung with ancient brocade, of a beautiful cabinet holding priceless curios, of an alluring, scented boudoir intended for five-o’clock chants with intimates (Gale).” She is very specific in what exactly it is that she is missing. One might question whether she is a greedy person because she is not contempt with what she has.

The necklace itself symbolizes wealth and beauty. It's so flashy and beautiful, and so seemingly valuable. Despite its convincing outside, it turns out to be "false." It's all show, in other words, with no substance. Like "wealth," the necklace is the object of Mathilde's mad desire. Maybe the falseness of the necklace itself at the end is meant to mirror her false dreams of wealth. Having wealth is not worth the trouble, any more than the false necklace was worth ten years of poverty. Although, having wealth does have its advantages:  it does seem to do wonders for Madame, for instance, while poverty ruins Mathilde’s.

The author does a very good job in adding a twist to the ending. The irony of this story is that the necklace was in fact a fake. If Mathilde just swallowed her pride she and her husband would not have been in this predicament. The fact that the necklace is a fake may or may not have some kind of moral meaning. We could take it to mean that wealth, or appearances more broadly, are false. Being poverty stricken may ruin her appearance, but it forces her to become responsible and hardworking, and perhaps makes her appreciate what she had before.

We could all learn a lesson from this story. We should be happy with what we already have or, we should work extremely hard to get what we want. Not everything comes easy in life and sometimes we have to earn what we want. Whe never know what hardships taking the easy way out could bring. Take the necklace for example, everything is not as real as it seems.

Therapy Animals in Healthcare

Those of us, who own a pet, know the joy that they bring us each day. They make us want to get up in the morning, they are more than pets they’re family members. Dogs especially, give us unconditional love not only to cuddle with but to also give us their emotional support. So why not integrate a furry friend into the health care field. Animals are a lot more useful than just pets. They are a great help in emotional and physical therapy.  Bringing an animal into a hospital greatly improves the rate of healing of patients, as well in a senior’s home improves the quality of life. Patients who do not have anyone to visit them would get joy out of exposure of an animal.

Therapy dogs have a great, especially for children with disabilities. Animals are shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Also, animals are versatile enough to cover a large area of disabilities. In one study, a young girl with dyslexia benefitted from reading to a dog named Willie. The owner of the dog volunteered to bring him to the library so the girl could read to Willie. He helped her gain enough confidence to start practicing to read on her own and eventually read out loud where other children around her could hear. Eventually she learned to not get distracted by the people around her while she concentrated on reading (Watts). 

This dog in his own way “healed” her. She learned to gain confidence in herself. She did not let her disability affect her thanks to Willie. There need to be more programs out there for children like her. This little example helped us see that a dog can be versatile. Yes they are animals, but if this teaches us anything, is that they are more than animals.

The professional use of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) started with a psychiatrist names Dr. Boris Levinson that, while treating a severely disturbed child, noticed the amazing effects that his dog, Jingles, had on the child’s behavior. The child, after being left alone for just a couple of minutes with Jingles, was found to be talking and “breaking out” of his shell a little. The growing number of pets in U.S. homes corresponds to the growing number of therapy animals. Many therapists have claimed that AAT provides an opportunity for children to experience success and adaptation to their environment. These children in the AAT programs become more active in their own therapy, are more self –reliant, and are comfortable with themselves (Chitic). Had it not been for the psychiatrist stepping out of the room and leaving the child there by himself with the dog, he would have never known the benefits that his dog brought to the child. Who knows how the child would have been emotionally down the road.

 There are a growing number of young children with autism in the U.S. today. It is estimated that one in 109 children are diagnosed with autism. Interaction with animals can help children with autism become more physically developed and improve their; strength, coordination, and physical abilities. More importantly, many people get a lot joy from their relationship with animals, which can help autistic children have a better sense of well-being and more self-confidence.

Therapy dogs can even fulfill a dying Hospice patient’s last wish. There is a video on YouTube about a 17-year-old therapy dog that accompanied a Hospice patient to the movies to see “Harry Potter” before she passed away. The dog’s name was Baxter and he went happily in a red carriage. This was a news coverage video from FOX channel 6. The lady passed away shortly after that (Dennisrbussey).

Although the AAT practices were started in England at AAT at the York Asylum in England in the late 18^th century, they were not recognized as a certified therapy practice (Chitic). AAT is designated to help with physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and thinking skills. They also help with motivation and education by making children more excited to learn while having the company of a furry friend. There is no definite answer when trying to define social skills. Merrell and Gimpel give a definition suggesting that: “Social skills are learned, composed of specific behaviors, include initiations and responses, maximize social reinforcement, are interactive and situation-specific, and can be specified as targets for intervention.” This tells us that while not using social skill may be a social skill deficit, the use of social skills is adaptive (Chitic).

Many people confuse AAT with service dogs. Service dogs are Seeing Eye dogs, they help with everyday tasks such as getting ready in the morning, helping its handler walk down the street, etc., and therapy dogs are aids in specific medically necessary therapy. They help people to cope with emotional problems, also encourage doing physical tasks that would be difficult for a person who is not motivated to get going.

AAT helps patients to emotionally cope with the fact that they have cancer and have a long way to go. Recovery may be minimal and some surgery may be disfiguring, but these animals help them process what they are going through. They also help the patients with their anxiety about the pain, symptoms, and death. The non-drug treatment with cancer management also helps improve patient’s quality of life (Reed). The dogs have been highly trained to stay calm in stressful situations and to interact with strangers bringing them comfort and emotional support.

There is another example of a boy who had cancer and having a therapy dog made him more comfortable in social situations (Marcus). He didn’t feel so awkward around his friends or family. His friends and strangers did not start conversations about the way he looked, but about his therapy dog. There are some cons that parents must realize before making the commitment to get involved in a therapy dog program. The animals must be well behaved, kept clean and parasite free, not be sick, and be up-to-date with vaccines.

There are certain things one must do before getting their pet certified. The dog must go through a strict behavior training program. Any dog can be a therapy dog as long as they can stay calmed and well behaved. A service dog cannot be a therapy dog as well. There is no age limit that the handler must be in order to participate in the program, but they do need a parent to accompany them to the visitations if they are under the age of 18 (TDI). They also will need their guardian to sign the registration form granting them permission. If the handler wants more than one pet on their team to accompany them to their scheduled visits, they must have all pets that they wish to bring with them tested at the same time to determine how well their teamwork is.

The test evaluation usually begins as soon as the tester can physically see the handler and the dog, not just during the testing phase. There are many requirements that a dog must meet before taking the certification test. They must be at least one year of age and be fully vaccinated (TDI). They must be in good health standing as determined by the veterinarian. They must be parasite free and have a negative fecal exam. They are not required to be fixed.  They look at how the animal relates to the handler and vice-versa. How the animal and handler relate to others(TDI). The animal must be reliable, predictable, and controllable.  They need to be people-oriented and sociable, comfortable being touched awkwardly at times. Also, able to cope with stressful situations while being comfortable crowded by a group of people and. Last but not least, have a non-threatening or neutral body posture, a.k.a. a relaxed face (TDI).

Patients need to feel comfortable with the handler in order for the therapy to work to its fullest. That’s why there are some requirements a handler must meet. They must be friendly, comfortable in healthcare settings, be confident, natural and relaxed. Also, be aware of animal behaviors, responses and reassure with cues, be proactive. They need ensure the animal’s well-being, not yell or jerk on the leash. And last but not least, have a gentle interaction with your animal in a friendly, normal tone.

Not everyone is cut out to be a therapy dog handler. There are many people that cannot control their emotions and keep their personal beliefs to themselves. Also not everyone can visit a Hospice location without getting emotional and making the patient feel worse.

The above reasons give us a solid understanding of the effects of animals in hospitals and senior residences, showing us that is in our best interest to introduce animals into healing environments and nursing facilities. To have a wonderful, well behaved, furry friend to come and visit helps patients greatly.

Death to us all

We were asked by the king to escort a cleaning crew through an abandoned prison so they could reinstate it and use it. It was very large and looked like no one had entered in about 30 years. My party gladly accepted the task at had.
The party consisted of a gunslinger, a cleric, a rogue, and a warrior. We searched every room one by one. On the first few rooms we did not find anything but, as we continued on, a giant spider jumps down and attacked the cleric with such force that he tossed in the corner unconscious  The bad news for us is that he was the only healer and no of us had any potions on hand.
I quickly draw my gun and start shooting but, before I could reload it starts charging at me. The warrior quickly runs towards the spider swinging his 6 foot sword and manages to cut 2 of the legs, which manages to slow down the creepy crawler. The rogue does what he is best at and just stealth on through ignoring the fact that we were fighting this beast mumbling something along the lines of "I think you guys can handle that..." I shoot one last time and it lands right smacked in the middle of his forehead. At last he is dead. As the cleric comes to we notice that here is green goo oozing from the spider and surrounding us to where we could not escape. As I took my last breath of air all I could think of was how we failed the mission.

New project

I feel like I should post here more often but I never get the chance. My hubby bought me a tablet so I could blog and do things on the go but I'm just working all the time so it hectic. In any case, I'm getting ready for a convention in June so I though I would share one of the projects I've been working on. It's a pokeball coin pouch also made to fit credit cards. It is all 100% hand sewn. Its all made out of felt and I made the pattern myself. In a few days, if I'm able, i will be posting the other different pouches that I have been working on.

Daily news from the web.

One of the first things I do before I go to bed is check out the news on yahoo.com and msn.com. Everyday I find something interesting to read. Today I read a few stories. One of the stories had to do with a software engineer that was outsourcing his job to a person in China for one fifth of his pay.
If you ask me this is a very smart man because while he sat as his desk surfing the Internet and checking his e-mail, while some John Doe was out there in China doing his work for him. I hope he doesn't get fired for being a "smart" man. If you would like to check out the story you can click here.

The second store I read was about a dog that for the past couple of months has been attending mass everyday at the chuch where his owner's funeral was held late last year. This is truly and amazing show of how he is truly man's best friend, or in this case, a woman's best friend. I feel so bad for this dog. He must still be greaving the los of his owner. On a side note I hope to have a preview of the pieces I have worked on for the past months. I seem to have been on a pony and glitte kick lately. I only have about 4 pieces to show. I might even give one away if I'm feeling up to it.

For this semester I signed up for two courses. One of them is English 2 and the other is Drawing 1. The art teacher inspires me to draw again. The last time I drew something was in high school. Lately while I've been show at work I have doodled a lot. These are some examples of the stuff that's been hanging around my work area.  I how you guys like this and trust me there is more to come.

I can't believe blogger finally came out with an Android app for blogging. I mean it makes it a heck of a lot easier for me to type or talk to my phone and it types for me. The 1 bad thing I have to say about talking into my phone to type for me is that it doesn't do proper grammar or capitalize anything. Other than that this app is really awesome. There really is a little guy upstairs that really understands me. Mainly what I have been doing lately is watching a lot of Korean dramas trying to learn Korean. today was my first day of school and it was really nerve wrecking just a start that system back up. I also had some fun with my hair today. I got a haircut pretty sure and then I colored my hair blue and purple in a lot of areas. It came out really cool the girl did a great job. If I can figure out how to post a picture through blogger, well through my phone, I guess I will post it up. Well look at that it only took me 3 seconds to figure out how to post a picture on here. This is the back of my head anyways. Okay my peeps tonight I bid you a good night.

Hello my long lost friends!!!

It has felt like eternity. The last time I blogged was in 2011. Geez I can't believe it has been that long. I have a ton of things to show you guys in the months to come. Some might not be crafty related but most of it will be. I will also be putting the link to my youtube channel in case you guys forgot :) I have been working really hard in school and I also have a new job now. That means bye bye Humane Society, I didn't really want to part ways but I had to let you go my love you were killing me, and hello Lucky Dog.
I hope you guys are not mad at me for being on hiatus for too long. I promise this time around it will be different. No more excuses!

I decided to make an altered frame for the last day of the hop. I just love the paper that was sent to us. I decided tp use the purple multilined one because it stood out to me the most. I decided to make a penguin pendant made out of resin. There are a total of 3 layers and the total time it took me was 32 hours :) The background has light blue gillter and on the bottom there is snow. I sanded the edges and used sculpey gloss glaze to finish it. I hope you like it and come back friday for another project..

DCD Challenge #32

Oh my! It seems like its been forever since I posted something here. I feel really bad. I had to pack most of my craft stuff because I thought we were moving.... Anyways, this week at DCD our challenge was to make something with an animal in it. I made an 8x8 scrapbook page. I also challenged myself to make something with 3 colors, one of them being one I hate to scrap with... That was yellow. I guess you can say I'm not a fan. This page might have changed my mind a little because I love the way it turned out. The cuts are from the Create a Critter cart. I also stamped some random white and black hearts with a stamp that I found at a Big Lots for 50 cents.

I have been very busy in the past few weeks making art and spending time with my family that I had no time to blog. In any case I have made a few nice things I will be showing you all in the coming weeks. There might even be a few surprises :) I'm excited to say that I will be back to normal somewhat this week.
